Wild In The Streets

Awesomely, and yet sadly, complete skateboards are not an uncommon donation here at the Junk Store. We probably get over 10 a year, and that doesn't include all those crappy plastic-truck toy store generics. We get so many, we actually sell them to customers!

We get the really ancient clay wheelers, your bright orange banana boards, your mid-80s fat boys (often with rails and copers and such), your early 90s small-wheel brittle boards, those shop graphics and blanks, and your modern street set-ups. We even have a flat-rail stashed behind the dumpster for some lazy Sunday sessions. And oh how I wish I took some photos of the time Big Merl and Top Cat built a quarterpipe up the side of the loading dock using scrap wood. We told the boss it was a ramp for the dolly. 

So here is a mere sample of the many boards that have gotten me to the deli and back over the past couple of years. I keep a constantly rotating collection of about 7 boards in the Sorting Room (even though I'm the only skater working at the Junk Store these days) that we have just in case a gnarly curb sesh pops-up unexpectedly.

Heat Zone

The first skateboard I ever owned was a Nash Heat Zone. Just like this one that was recently donated, except mine was neon pink and didn't have the rails or a tail block or anything. Man, that was a crappy skateboard, but I was pretty psyched to get it for my birthday back when I was 8 or 9. I never really rode it that much and didn't actually learn skate until I got a street deck when I was 15 or so. Still, in the unlikely event that I'm being interviewed in a skating context and somebody asks me about my first skateboard, I'm gonna have to tell the truth: "Heat Zone".

Rip It Up

Obviously, we're always on the lookout for skateboards and skate related merchandise here at the Junk Store. We'll take whatever you got: decks, wheels, brokenbearings, tech decks, toy store crap boards, broken boards, clay wheels, long boards, anything.

A while back on a special afternoon we unloaded two legit skates off the truck....

We've got a well worn but still tip-top cruiser from Black Label, plus a brand new blank deck. Pretty good score. I thought that maybe the skate-donation-Gods were smiling down upon me for a long-run, but we haven't gotten anything skateable since these.

What is so great about these two remote control "Extreme Skateboard" toys is that they came in with two separate donations about 5 days apart. The Jammer scrounged around for an hour to come up with six double-As and a 9-volt to get one of them running (7 batteries for just one of these things!!!) and all it could do were a couple of 360-spinners. We tried to make a little roll-in ramp but the skater just fell over... just like in real life. Extreme indeed.
